Cash, cards, tipping, dress codes and the everyday etiquette that make a visit anywhere smoother.
Money
Check the local currency and exchange rate before you go. Cards are often accepted in hotels, malls and larger restaurants; carry cash for markets, small food stalls, taxis and villages. Use ATMs inside banks or malls and cover your PIN. Change money only at banks or licensed money changers, and avoid street changers with 'too good' rates. Tipping customs vary, so check each country's page.
Customs differ by country, so read the destination's page before you go. Dress modestly at religious sites, and cover shoulders and knees at temples, churches and mosques. Ask before photographing people and ceremonies. In some places public displays of affection are frowned upon, and in some cultures you should use your right hand to give, receive and eat, and not touch people's heads. During Ramadan, avoid eating or drinking in public in the daytime in Muslim areas. Drugs can be punished extremely severely in some countries.
Everyday practical
Plugs and voltage differ by country, so check before you pack. Tap water is not safe to drink everywhere; if you are unsure, use bottled or filtered water. SIM cards: buy at the airport or official phone shops, and carry your passport in case it is needed. Ride-hailing apps can be an easy way around cities where they operate.
