Attractive locations

Po-i-Kalyan Complex

The main religious ensemble of old Bukhara, grouping the tall Kalyan Minaret, the large Kalan Mosque and the Mir-i-Arab Madrasa around a square. The minaret was a landmark for traders arriving by caravan.

Lyab-i Hauz

A pool shaded by old mulberry trees at the heart of Bukhara, surrounded by madrasas and a former caravanserai. Tea houses around it make a pleasant place to sit.

Ark of Bukhara

A massive fortress on a raised mound that served as the home and court of Bukhara's rulers for centuries. Parts hold museums showing the history of the city and its emirs.

Samanid Mausoleum

A small tenth-century tomb built of patterned baked brick, praised for its fine geometry and early architecture. It stands in a quiet park and is one of Central Asia's oldest Islamic monuments.

Chor Minor

A small gatehouse in the old town with four towers topped by blue domes, each with a different design. It is an unusual building and a favorite photo stop.

Bolo Haouz Mosque

A mosque facing the Ark, known for its tall porch of slim carved wooden columns that reflect in the pool in front, and the painted ceiling beneath the roof.

Sitorai Mokhi-Khosa Palace

The former summer residence of Bukhara's last emirs, outside the old city, mixing Central Asian and Russian styles with rooms, courtyards and a garden with peacocks.
