Attractive locations

Golden Gate Bridge

The orange-red suspension bridge across the entrance to San Francisco Bay, one of the best-known bridges in the world. Pedestrians and cyclists can cross it, and viewpoints on both sides frame it well.

Alcatraz Island

A rocky island in San Francisco Bay that held a federal prison for decades, now a national park with an audio tour of the cell blocks. Ferries from the waterfront carry visitors.

Fisherman's Wharf

A busy waterfront district with seafood stalls, souvenir shops and historic ships, close to the piers where boats leave for trips on the bay.

Golden Gate Park

A very large city park stretching toward the Pacific, with museums, gardens, lakes, a bison paddock and a conservatory, and a favorite place for strolling, cycling and picnics.

San Francisco Cable Cars

Historic cable cars that climb the city's steep streets, hauled by a moving underground cable. A ride gives a classic view of hills, the bay and old neighborhoods.

Alamo Square

A hilltop park known for the row of colorful Victorian houses called the Painted Ladies, which stand against the downtown skyline and appear in many films and photographs.

Lombard Street

A short, steep block with eight tight hairpin bends, lined with flower beds and houses. Visitors walk beside it or drive down slowly.
