Attractive locations

Nis Fortress

A large Ottoman-era fortress beside the Nisava River, with thick walls, gates and a park inside. Cafes, a summer stage and walking paths make it the city's main gathering place.

Skull Tower

A stark monument built by the Ottomans from the skulls of Serbian fighters killed in an 1809 battle. It is now enclosed in a chapel, and remains a symbol of Serbian resistance.

Mediana

The remains of a Roman residence from the time of Emperor Constantine the Great, who was born in the city. Visitors can see mosaics, columns, baths and parts of the villa's large halls.

Sicevo Gorge

A scenic gorge cut by the Nisava River east of Nis, with steep cliffs, small villages and an old monastery nearby. It offers a quiet nature escape for walks and photography.

Cathedral Church of the Holy Trinity (Saborna crkva)

The main Orthodox church of Nis, a large 19th-century building with bright domes and a painted interior. It stands in the town centre near the main pedestrian street.

Gamzigrad (Felix Romuliana)

The remains of a late Roman palace complex with fortified walls, towers and mosaics, built by Emperor Galerius. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in eastern Serbia, a day trip from Nis.
