A marine park of steep coral walls just off Manado, famous for diving and snorkelling over reefs that drop away into deep blue water.

Best time: Morning, dry season

Tip: Dive only with a certified operator and ask about currents and sea conditions that day. Snorkelling day trips usually come back in the afternoon, so start early.

The largest lake in North Sulawesi, with mountains all around. Lakeside and floating restaurants serve grilled freshwater fish with spicy sambal.

Costs

Prices here are about 29% of US prices (World Bank, 2025). This compares a country's overall prices, not the cost of a trip.

Practical information

Getting there

Fly to Sam Ratulangi International Airport (MDC), about 11-13 km from Manado city - allow 30-45 minutes by road. Bunaken boats leave from Manado harbour, or from your resort.

Best time

Roughly May to October is the drier season and the best time for diving, though Bunaken can be dived most of the year. December to February is wetter with rougher seas. Mid-August is flower-festival time in Tomohon.

Respect & dress

Minahasa is mostly Christian, and Sundays are for church, so expect quieter mornings. Dress modestly in villages and at places of worship. Muslim travellers: Manado has a Great Mosque and halal places to eat, but many local dishes use pork, so ask before you order.

Getting around

The sights are spread across the peninsula - a car with driver is easiest for Tomohon, Tondano, Tangkoko and Likupang. In town use taxis or ride-hailing apps; island trips need a boat arranged in advance.

Who can help

Emergency numbers in Indonesia

112 - general emergency (free, works from any phone where the service is live). 110 - police. 118 / 119 - ambulance and medical emergency. 113 - fire. 115 - search and rescue (BASARNAS). English is understood in the main tourist areas; elsewhere ask your hotel to call for you.

Lost passport or serious trouble

Report a lost passport to the nearest police station (get the police report), then contact your embassy or consulate for an emergency travel document. Keep a photo of your passport in your e-mail or phone - it speeds everything up. The official embassy list linked here shows where to find your country's embassy or consulate.

Hospitals

Big cities and Bali have international-standard private hospitals (e.g. Siloam, BIMC in Bali, Mayapada, RS Pondok Indah in Jakarta). Public referral hospitals are cheaper but busier. Ask your hotel or travel insurer for the nearest suitable hospital.
